Literary Lunchtime with Anchee Min

This is the first in a new series at the Asia Society with the first program highlighting a reading and discussion of Anchee Min’s new novel Pearl of China, a novel inspired by the author Pearl Buck. Min will be joined by Emily Parker, a fellow for the Arthur Ross Center on US-China relations.

Moravian Cemetery Tour: A Who’s Who in Staten Island History
2 p.m.
Join Richard L. Simpson, the “cemetery guy” for a 90-minute tour of this local cemetery. Today the focus will be on the Atlantic Avenue section with looks at resting places of Alice Austen, George Wm. Curtis (Curtis High School), Judge Erastus Brooks (the first person to make use of the telegraph for newspaper reports), historian and philanthropist Dorothy Valentine Smith, Elmer Dundy (owner of Coney Island’s Luna Park), cigar manufacturer Alvaro Garcia (Garcia & Vega), pencil manufacturer Eberhard Faber, Dr. Nathaniel Lord Britton (founder-New York Botanical Gardens), and historian/author Charles W. Leng.
